Team captain Matthew Briggs led the Burlington Co-Op boys swim team in a 116-50 loss at Lake Geneva Badger Tuesday.

Briggs won the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke, and was the anchor leg on the 400-yard freestyle relay team that also secured a victory.

Head coach Denita Jones said that in this meet she allowed her swimmers to swim in events they normally did not swim in.

“They got to pick something they could have fun with,” she said.

Briggs chose to compete in the 200 freestyle for the first time this season, and turned in a time of two minutes 5.05 seconds. That was just .5 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.

In the 100 backstroke, Briggs won with a time of 1:03.92, to best the second-place finisher, Burlington’s David Jones, by 2.5 seconds.

The 400-freestyle relay team consisted of David Jones, Anthony Krebs, Shaun Weber and Briggs. The foursome turned in a time of 3:55.95, which was over nine seconds faster than the No. 1 Badger relay team.

Those three wins were the extent of the top finishes by the co-op team, as Badger’s depth was simply too much to overcome.

In the 200 freestyle, besides Briggs’ winning time, Weber was third and Andrew Brutlog fourth.

Jones noted that Bryce Filer in the 500-yard freestyle knocked five minutes off his previous best time, finishing fourth in 6:51.04.

“That was a really good swim for him,” she said.

The boys will compete in the South Milwaukee Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 7, at South Milwaukee Middle School.

Next week, they will host Whitewater at the Burlington Wellness Center on Tuesday, Jan. 10, at 6 p.m.

After that meet, they will have two weeks off before their next competition.
