When two teams who are both winless in their conference face each other, one of them is going to get their first conference win. Unfortunately, for the Burlington High School girls’ basketball team, it was the Delavan-Darien Comets who got their first Southern Lakes Conference victory, not the Demon girls.

Delavan-Darien defeated Burlington 51-38 Tuesday, handing the Demons their eighth straight loss. Overall, Burlington is now 2-9 on the season, and 0-4 in the SLC.

Burlington grabbed a 9-6 lead after one quarter, but fell behind 18-17 at the half.

In the second half, the Comets outscored the Demons 33-21 to put the game away. Delavan-Darien led 30-21 after three quarters.

In the fourth quarter, Burlington, in an attempt to get back into the game, was forced to foul. The strategy did not work, though, as Delavan-Darien sank 12 of 15 free throws in the final eight minutes. Overall, the Comets were 17 of 24 from the foul line.

Burlington made it to the foul line 22 times, but sank just 11. They were 5 of 10 in the fourth quarter.

Delavan’s Kylie Collins led all scorers with 19 points. Nine of those points came in the fourth quarter.

Burlington had no one in double figures, with three players scoring six points.

Schedule

The Demons will host Union Grove on Friday, Jan. 6, at 7 p.m., in an SLC matchup.

Next week, they will be at Lake Geneva on Thursday, Jan. 12, at 7 p.m. for an SLC game against Badger.
