For three quarters, it looked like winless Delavan-Darien might pull off a huge upset over the Union Grove boys’ basketball team Tuesday night. But a 26-13 margin in the final quarter gave the Broncos a 61-52 Southern Lakes Conference home win.

“It was very scary for three quarters,” head coach David Pettit said. “They kind of outhustled and outplayed us for most of the game. We really struggled shooting the ball.”

The Comets led 14-9 after one quarter, but Union Grove rallied to tie it at 24 apiece at the half.

Delavan-Darien retook the lead after three quarters, and led 39-35 going into the final eight minutes.

The Bronco boys finally took the lead late in the fourth quarter and led by three points with about 1-1/2 minutes to play.

After Delavan-Darien missed a shot, Andrew Kazikowski was fouled with 1:02 to play. He sank both free throws to give the Broncos a five-point lead.

Union Grove made eight of 10 free throws down the stretch to pull away to the nine-point win.

“We got some big shots at the end,” Pettit said.

As has been the case all season, the Broncos got balanced scoring with three players in double figures.

Brett Van Vreede led the way with 18 points. Matt Herndon and Matt Wolff had 11 each.

With the win, Union Grove improved to 9-4 and 5-2 in the SLC. Delavan-Darien fell to 0-13 and 0-8.
