Standouts for the week of Oct. 14, 2011

Male Athlete of the Week

Carson Biedrzycki

Carson Biedrzycki, Burlington High School boys volleyball: The BHS junior proved to be a big factor for the Demons in a four-set win over Whitefish Bay last week.

In the 20-25, 25-23, 27-25, 25-19 Burlington win, Biedrzycki had 22 kills and two block kills. Coach Tim Gesteland estimated the junior hit about .900 for the match, killing almost every ball he put his hands on.

Biedrzycki also had 12 kills in Burlington’s five-set loss to Franklin Monday night.

Female Athlete of the Week

Stephanie Londre

Stephanie Londre, Burlington High School girls tennis: Londre heads back to the WIAA Division 1 state tournament for the fourth time in a row this week.

Londre won the Badger sectional for the third year in a row last week, winning three matches without losing a set and only losing eight total games.

Londre earned the No. 8 seed in the tournament, the first time she has earned a seed. She was an alphabetical seed last year, meaning she was one of the top 16 players in the tournament.

She is 28-0 on the season so far.

Also considered: Kelly Gould, Catholic Central High School girls volleyball.

Team of the Week

Waterford Union High School football: With the exception of a close loss to Wilmot back on Sept. 2, the Waterford Union High School football team has been pretty much dominant this year.

The Wolverines gave another example of that Friday by demolishing Delavan-Darien, 66-10.

The Comets scored the first points of the game – a field goal by Alex Limones – but then didn’t score again until the third quarter. In between, Waterford ran off 59 unanswered points, including three touchdowns by Greg Steffens on a 123-yard evening.

The Wolverines ran up 354 yards in the rushing game and 133 yards passing as quarterback Zach Fisher was 5-for-6 passing with one touchdown.

Romo Watch

The Dallas Cowboys, including quarterback and BHS graduate Tony Romo, enjoyed a bye week this week.

The Cowboys return to action Sunday by traveling to New England for a 3:15 p.m. game that will be televisied on Fox.

Blue Devils

The Southern Lakes Blue Devils opened the Mid-States tournament Saturday with a win over the Lake Geneva Generals Saturday.

The win advances the Blue Devils to play the Racine Raiders for the Mid-States title. Game date, time and location were unavailable by press deadline, but the Blue Devils are also scheduled to play the Indiana Mustangs Sunday at 5 p.m.

Game of the Week

In what could easily be the most important game of the season in the Southern Lakes Conference, Waterford and Lake Geneva Badger will square off at Badger Friday at 7 p.m.

The game will have implications on the entire SLC standings. If Waterford wins, there could be a three-way tie between Wilmot, Waterford and Badger on top of the SLC (Wilmot already has one loss, to Badger). If the Wolverines lose, they will likely finish third.

Meanwhile, Catholic Central will square off with Racine St. Catherine’s at Horlick Field Friday at 7 p.m. The Hilltoppers need to win the game to have a shot at the Midwest Classic Conference South Division title.

Burlington will host Union Grove at 7 p.m. Friday in the final area game. Both teams have been eliminated from playoff contention.
