Monday was supposed to be about a triumphant race on one of marathon’s biggest stages for Burlington High School graduate Cory Harris.
Instead, the runner turned into a witness to a terrorist attack at the Boston Marathon.
Cory Harris, a standout runner for BHS who survived a terrible car accident in 2009 – one where doctors told him he wouldn’t run again – finished Monday’s Boston Marathon in 3:10.57. He had been finished for about 45 minutes when the first of two explosions rocked the finish line area.
Harris called what happened a “horrific experience.”
“Sad for everyone involved,” said Harris, who communicated through texts and Facebook Monday afternoon and evening.
Facebook turned into a wonderful outlet for communication Monday. One of Harris’ teachers, Tim Mocarski, posted Harris’ finishing time a little less than two hours before the incident. The timing allowed people to know Harris had been off the course when the attacks took place, and Harris posted to Facebook himself around 3:50 p.m.
“Thanks so much for the posts, calls and texts, I really appreciate the thoughts and prayers,” said Harris. “My family and I were less than a block away when the explosions occurred, but fortunately we are all ok! I’ll keep you posted!”
