If there’s one thing that Burlington Cost Cutters manager Cindy Horner doesn’t have a problem supporting, it’s United Way.
“We like the things United Way does,” said Horner. “We just like all the different programs that they work with.”
It’s why the salon is gearing up for its second annual cut-a-thon, set for Sunday, Aug. 25 from 5-7 p.m.
There is a minimum donation of $10 per haircut. With that donation, customers will receive a coupon for a free cookie at the Subway located at Walmart (where Cost Cutters is also located). With an additional donation, customers can receive a free sub sandwich coupon.
All proceeds will benefit United Way of Racine. BMO Harris Bank and Bear Realty in Burlington have also made donations to help fuel the fundraising event.
Horner said things went pretty well last year with the cut-a-thon, with about 50 people coming in for haircuts.
“It was pretty successful last year,” Horner said. “We’d like to see more this year.”
Colleen Benkendorf, the Western Racine coordinator for United Way, said the organization received nearly $1,000 last year from the cut-a-thon.
“This year, we’re looking to even get more money,” Benkendorf said. “Get more people to learn about United Way by stopping by, getting a haircut and picking up a brochure.”
Benkendorf has a personal tie to Cost Cutters as well. One of the stylists, Candie Edwards, is the mother of her grandson.
“It’s great for me,” Benkendorf said. “Not only is it family, but it’s friends and it’s people I’ve never known before embracing United Way.
“It’s bringing the community together.”
