Due to encroaching floodwaters from the Fox River, state transportation officials will close Highway 50 in western Kenosha County early Friday morning.
The highway will be closed from Highway 83 on the west to Highway 75 on the east, according to officials with the state Department of Transportation officials.
Drivers will be detoured on highways 83 and 75 north to Highway 142 and then back to Highway 50.
According to the National Weather Service in Sullivan, the Fox River near New Munster was 13.6 feet as of 3 p.m. Thursday. Flood stage is 10.0 feet. Moderate flooding is occurring and major flooding is forecast.
The weather service predicts the river will continue rising to near 15 feet by early Saturday morning then begin falling.
Drivers who regularly use Highway 50 in that area are advised to take alternative routes.
