The Burlington High School one-act play “The Laramie Project” pulled in several top awards Saturday at the Wisconsin High School Forensic Association State Theater festival.
As the cast left the stage following the performance, the audience came out of the theater. Many were in tears over the show, which highlights attitudes and opinions on homosexuality in Laramie, Wyoming following the real-life beating and subsequent death of Matthew Shepard in 1998.
The play – which advanced to state by unanimous approval of the judging panels – brought home Outstanding Directing, Outstanding Ensemble Performance and Critics’ Choice for the second consecutive year.
The play drew a standing ovation at Waunakee High School’s Blue Theater.
