A Lyons Township Fire Department firefighter was taken off life support Tuesday after being hit by a truck Monday afternoon.

Josh Tauscher, 24, died at about 2 a.m. Wednesday morning following Monday’s accident. He was struck at Highway 50 and South Road near Lyons Monday while riding his motorcycle with another member of the fire department for an afternoon recreational ride.

Tauscher was not wearing a helmet, according to Lyons Fire Chief Neal Lara.

According to media reports, emergency personnel were on scene almost immediately – including Lyons’ fire and rescue personnel.

“It’s a whole different mindset,” Lara said. “There were a lot of people who didn’t even understand who it was until the ambulance was gone.”

Tauscher was transported by ambulance to Aurora Memorial Hospital of Burlington, then taken by Flight for Life to Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin in Wauwatosa.

The Lyons Fire Department Facebook page had the following post later Tuesday:

“It is with great sadness that the Lyons Township Fire Department announces the passing of fire fighter Josh Tauscher. He was involved in a tragic accident last night.”

More details were to follow.

Tauscher had been with the fire department about six years, starting as soon as he was eligible to join the department.

“He was always happy to help anybody do anything,” Lara said. “He was outgoing and liked to help the community and the people in it.”

A candlelight vigil was held Monday evening at the site of the accident, drawing more than 100 people.
