It’s that time of the year again – and no, that isn’t referring to the holidays.
Those running for public office could officially take out election papers starting this week, and as of Tuesday, there were no major surprises.
All incumbents – with the exception of Burlington Area School District President David Thompson – had taken out papers.
That includes City Council Aldermen Ed Johnson, Ruth Dawidziak, Tom Vos and Tom Preusker, Mayor Bob Miller, Town Board members Joan Boehm and Jeff Lang, and School Board members Rosanne Hahn and Bill Campbell.
Thompson had announced previously that he did not intend to seek reelection.
The School Board election has the potential to be the most exciting of the local races. Last spring, the four candidates to survive the primary elections split along clear distinct lines – with candidates Julie Koldeway and Norma Miller on one side and Larry Anderson and Jim Bousman on the other.
After several weeks of contention, Bousman and Anderson were elected.
Priscilla Crowley, the administrative assistant to BASD Superintendent Peter Smet, said Tuesday that two of the incumbents had taken out papers, as well as one other, but no one had returned their papers as of yet.
Members of the City Council received papers at Tuesday night’s meeting from City Clerk Diahnn Halbach, but only Dawidziak, Vos and Preusker confirmed they would be running.
Johnson indicated he would be taking some time to make a decision.
For the Town Board, Town Administrator Diane Baumeister said Boehm had already returned her paperwork, and Lang confirmed Tuesday night that he would also be seeking re-election.
“I enjoy doing the job, and hopefully the citizens will feel I’m doing a good job,” Lang said.
Anyone interested in seeking local office should contact the clerk of the board or council they are considering.
