Burlington Area School District School Board President David Thompson made it official following Monday night’s board meeting.
When asked if the rumors were true that he would not seek re-election to the School Board in the spring, he confirmed them.
“It’s no real secret,” said Thompson. “I’ve made no bones about it to people who have asked me.
“I think that I’ve served the public well,” he added. “It’s time for me to pursue some personal and professional interests.”
Thompson would not speculate about what those future interests would be, though did hint an announcement might come later this year or in early 2014. He has served two terms on the board, and has been the School Board President for the last two and a half years. He also served as a citizen representative to several committees.
The highly politicized atmosphere surrounding the board didn’t make Thompson want to leave, but as he explained, it didn’t play the other direction, either.
“It doesn’t contribute to making me want to stay,” Thompson said. “I think that the current climate is both good and bad for the district.
“It’s good because it sparks debate and encourages people to think,” he added. “It’s bad because it’s contentious. It is polarizing.
“And it’s tiring.”
Still, Thompson said he was confident he could have been re-elected in the spring.
“I like a good fight,” he explained. “I’m confident I could get re-elected.”
However, he added that it is time for others in the community to serve on the board.
“There’s many other people in the community that are ready to step up and assume leadership,” he said. “I’m sure someone else will.”
