Van Wanggard has staked a commanding victory in the Republican primary race against Jonathan Steitz for the 21st District Senate seat.
Unofficial totals from the district, which includes most of western Racine and Kenosha counties, show Wanggaard winning the race 10,561 to 4,291. Wanggaard bested Steitz 539 to 326 in the City of Burlington, and in the Town of Burlington, where he staked a 335 to 170 advantage.
Wanggaard’s advantage in Kenosha County, where Steitz resides, was not as wide (59 to 41 percent) with all 20 precincts counted.
Wanggaard, who was recalled in the 2012 election, will be returned to the State Senate to succeed the man who beat him — John Lehman. Wanggaard, who ran on his record as a backer of Gov. Scott Walker’s reforms, was endorsed by Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan. Steitz ran a vigorous campaign proclaiming himself as the more conservative of the two candidates for what is now a decidedly Republican district.
Wanggaard will face Democrat Randy Bryce of Racine in the Nov. 4 general election.
Vos wins in landslide
In the 63rd Assembly District, Assembly Speaker Robin Vos rolled to an 86 to 10 percent victory over Bryn Biemeck for the GOP nomination. Unofficial totals showed Vos with 4,592 votes to Beimeck’s 540.
Winners of both the 21st Senate District and 63rd Assembly District races will be prohibitive favorites to win the seats in the Republican-leaning districts in the general election on Nov. 4.
