In keeping with a recent trend, the Burlington Area School District Board of Education election in April will feature a full slate of candidates.
Six candidates have filled for three open spots by Tuesday’s deadline, one short of the number needed to force a primary election.
While there will not be a need for a primary this time around, at least one position will be filled by a newcomer. School Board President David Thompson announced late in fall that he would not return to the School Board.
Fellow incumbents William Campbell and Rosanne Hahn will seek re-election, while four newcomers will challenge them.
Bob Lemken, a former citizen committee representative with the School Board who resigned this fall after citizen reps’ voting rights were removed, will be running. So will Burlington attorney Todd Terry.
The other two challengers are James Berndt and Catherine Thielen.
The last two School Board elections have been highly contentious.
Quiet in city and town
In terms of excitement, don’t expect much from the City of Burlington Common Council and Town of Burlington Board of Supervisors races this spring.
The only candidates running in either jurisdiction will be the incumbents – Aldermen Ed Johnson (District 1), Ruth Dawidziak (District 2), Tom Vos (District 3) and Tom Preusker (District 4) in the City of Burlington, and Supervisors Joan Boehm and Jeff Lang for the Town Board.
“I expect they will be low-key,” said City of Burlington Mayor Bob Miller, who is also up for re-election and is also unopposed.
Burlington’s two representatives on the Racine County Board of Supervisors – Thomas Pringle and Mike Dawson – will run for re-election, but challengers (if any) were not available before press deadline.
