A political matchup of David vs. Goliath went Goliath’s way Tuesday evening, as state Assembly speaker Robin Vos earned re-election to the 63rd District.
The Republican incumbent was battling Andy Mitchell for the position. Mitchell refused to accept any PAC money and ran the campaign on a shoestring budget.
Unofficial results in Racine County had Vos with nearly 61 percent of the vote – 15,348 votes to 8,912 for Mitchell.
It was the largest margin of victory in any of his elections, Vos said Tuesday evening at a victory party at Veterans Terrace in Burlington.
“I think it’s an example that people are happy with the job we are doing in Madison,” Vos said. “Controlling taxes, focusing on solving problems and making sure Wisconsin moves forward.”
Vos has been a staunch supporter of Gov. Scott Walker, who along with Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch, also earned re-election Tuesday night. Vos has been in office since 2004.
Reached at home Tuesday night, Mitchell admitted he was disappointed.
“Well, it’s not the kind of results we were hoping for,” Mitchell said. “I had a great team, and I think I had a good message.
“I guess we didn’t do a good enough job of getting that message out – or I didn’t anyway,” Mitchell explained. “We need to look back and see what we’ve got to do different.”
Mitchell said the difficult part was knowing he hadn’t missed opportunities.
“We ran a campaign with very high ideals,” he said. “There’s nothing I wish I could take back.”
