Normally, the period for citizen comments at the Burlington Area School District monthly School Board meeting is reserved for people with an issue to address.
On Monday night, it turned instead into an opportunity for people to thank to outgoing School Board member Larry Anderson.
“It’s amazing what you’ve done,” said former BASD Assistant Superintendent Patricia Hoffman. “You’ve really made a difference.”
A large crowd was on hand for the monthly meet Monday – most to congratulate or thank Anderson for his work. The long-time school board member spent 18 years on Brighton School Board and another 18 at on the BASD board.
“I just wanted to thank you, Larry,” said Sue Sheldon, who was on hand with her husband, Mark. “You’ve been phenomenal.”
The cast in the audience was wide and varied. Sue Sheldon was an art teacher within BASD, as was Mark before he moved into an administrative role.
Other teachers and administrators – both past and present – were also in attendance.
Hoffman called Anderson a “superb intellect,” and said he checked his ego at the door.
Rose Dolatowski, the Director of Health Services in the district, said Anderson was “always the one doing the research.”
And former BASD Superintendent Jackson Parker, who was in attendance with his wife, Mary Ann Staupe, thanked Anderson for his “years of service to the youth of this area.”
“You taught me just about everything I know of school finance,” he added.
At the end of the meeting, during the superintendent’s comments, Anderson was presented a plaque for his years of service – and a garland strand of hands from Lyons Center School Principal Sue Mosher.
Mosher explained that the students made the garland, which had a hand for every year of service as a School Board member.
Anderson accepted both awards, then spoke for a few moments.
“I enjoyed the time serving the community,” he said.
