BASD deals with flurry of administrative changes

It’s been a summer of change for the Burlington Area School District.

With one principal retiring and another promoted to fill that position, still more positions opened up in mid-July when Keith Nerby – the Karcher Middle School principal – decided to take the principal position at Sun Prairie High School.

After everything shook out with the interview process, BHS Assistant Principal Jill Oelslager was hired as Karcher’s new principal. With both assistant principal positions open, BHS filled the spots with one internal and one external candidate.

Scott Schimmel, the former assistant at Karcher, fills the hole left by Joyce Uglow’s retirement from Dyer Intermediate School, and Matt Behringer – a math teacher from BHS – will fill Schimmel position as assistant principal at both Karcher and Dyer.

Schimmel and Behringer’s moves were announced earlier this summer. Nerby submitted his resignation after the July School Board meeting, effective July 13.

Oelslager comes to the Karcher head principal position after a number of years at BHS. After teaching science for eight years, she earned her Masters of Educational Leadership from Cardinal Stritch University in 2010 and assumed the assistant principal position at BHS for the 2011-12 school year.

She also recently began PhD work at Cardinal Stritch.

“Super-excited,” Oelslager said about the move. “I’ve heard really good things about the Karcher Staff. I’m really excited to work with the Karcher students.

“I’m just excited to make that transition,” Oelslager said. “I like to use that phrase that I’m just crossing the river, the Fox River.”

She’s also excited about working with Behringer in a new capacity.

“For us to have the ability to work together in a different capacity, I think it’s pretty cool,” she said. “We do have that strong relationship already there. The trust.

“I’m excited to continue my professional career in Burlington,” Oelslager added.

New assistants

It’s also going to be a new set of assistant administrators at BHS, with one internal candidate and one newcomer to fill the two open assistant positions.

Joel Graham, a 15-year science teacher in the district, will fill one assistant principal job. The other is filled by Jeremy Anderson a 15-year teaching veteran from Delavan-Darien High School.

Anderson taught social studies.

“I’m real excited,” Principal Eric Burling said. “The internal candidate provides some continuity. Jeremy gives us a fresh perspective, too.”

Burling said he is still working with the two to divide duties.
