The Burlington Area School District Buildings and Grounds and Transportation Committee recommended three different expenditures for full board approval Monday night.
The district is using its surplus in the food service fund – which must be reduced, per federal law – to purchase new dishwashers at Cooper Elementary School and Karcher Middle School, as well as new convection ovens at both schools.
Fund 50, the food service fund, cannot have a fund balance at the end of the year. As a result, the items are replaced as funding allows.
“We have some aging equipment,” explained Buildings and Grounds Manager Gary Olsen.
Cooper’s equipment is from the original installation in 1968, while Karcher’s is from the kitchen addition in 1979.
Olsen recommended going with the low bid on both projects. Staffford-Smith of Elkhorn would provide the dishwashers and installment at $54,561.20, while the convection ovens would be done by Boelter, LLC of Glendale for $12,180.
The committee also approved a not-to-exceed amount for the Burlington High School gymnasium floor repair.
According to Olsen, gym floor surfaces traditionally last between 12-15 years, putting BHS at the end of the floor’s surfacing life.
In addition, there are some damaged boards that will need to be replaced.
Olsen recommended going with the low bid – Schmidt Custom Floors of Waukesha at $52,250.
“I haven’t talked to anyone who hasn’t recommended their work,” Olsen said.
However, the cost for replacing the damaged boards isn’t included in the bid numbers – and won’t be known until the floor is actually addressed this summer.
As a result, School Board member Phil Ketterhagen suggested adding $4,800 – roughly the amount Olsen said was projected for the work – making a not-to-exceed amount of roughly $57,000.
That amount was recommended unanimously.
