While the Burlington High School one-act play may not have walked off with a boatload of awards Friday afternoon at the Wisconsin State Theater Festival, Director Carrie Fidler left satisfied.
“The students performed extremely well at state,” said Fidler, whose group – performing “Marvin’s Room” – picked up All-State recognition at the theater festival held at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater last Friday and Saturday. “The audience was very responsive, and the students performed with a lot of heart.
“It was very important to us that we hit all the right emotional subtleties and take Marvin’s Room out on a high note,” she added.
The cast and crew were nominated for seven awards – including three acting awards – but didn’t get the agreement needed from the panel of judges to receive them.
“Our judges had a wide range of opinions at state,” said Fidler.
However, she was still pleased with the competition season that included the school’s 13th-straight appearance at the state theater festival.
“Throughout the season, the kids were applauded for taking on a difficult show, and for understanding of the characters and situations they conveyed,” Fidler said. “We did a lot of workshopping of the staging and blocking, and the students were always willing to try new things and improve.”
