City budget set to be discussed on Tuesday

While the City of Burlington budget went without comment at the Nov. 17 Common Council meeting, the city is still working to put all the pieces into place.

City Administrator Carina Walters said Tuesday that the city is looking at a mill rate of $9.12 per $1,000 of property value.

Walters was quick to point out that the number was before state credits, which could reduce the amount. Last year’s mill rate was $8.81.

“We still don’t have everything final from the state,” Walters said Wednesday morning. She said, right now, that the city is working right now to finalize numbers.

The Common Council will look at the budget and the mill rate Tuesday in the Committee of the Whole meeting and potentially vote on it the same night.

Included in the budget is a new RFP to determine what the city will need to do regarding the community pool. The idea is to identify the cost for a feasibility study – which would include site location, cost and a potential referendum strategy and long-term maintenance.

Walters said the RFP would be released in mid-December with hopes of getting a company on board for the study in early 2016.

The next time the issue is before the council will be to determine which company the city will go with.
