The old joke of Wisconsin’s two seasons – winter and construction – came into play Tuesday night at the City of Burlington Common Council meeting.
The first notice to area residents for the reconstruction of city sidewalks has been sent out to homeowners. Special assessments are done to those homeowners, with half of the cost of repairing the sidewalks passed onto them and half covered by the city.
When one of the city aldermen questioned the cost of the project – and whether or not residents had complained about a possible $2,600 assessment for the work – Director of Public Works Craig Workman explained that homeowners receive two notices, and so far, he’d only received one call.
That, he said, was more questioning the cost of the project than a complaint. Sidewalk work is done on a complaint-motivated basis, and work is scheduled for several areas of the city, including Adams Street, Duane Street, Evergreen Court, Meadow Lane, South Perkins Boulevard, Parkview Drive and Shiloh Court.
New car track approved
The Common Council unanimously approved the hours for a remote-controlled car racetrack to be located at Hounds & Detectors, 456 Milwaukee Ave.
Hours will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Fridays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.
The race track will have a 3-foot wide perimeter, and will allow for remote-control cars no longer than 12 inches long and eight inches wide.
Alderman Tom Preusker did ask why the city was in charge of setting the hours. Because the use is considered an arcade or amusement game, city code requires that the council approve the hours.
The hours approved were what Hounds & Detectors asked for at last week’s Plan Commission meeting.
