Discussions on the contract for the City of Burlington’s next police chief continued Tuesday night in a closed session meeting.

City Administrator Carina Walters said Tuesday that while current city police Lt. Mark Anderson was the undisputed choice for the position, the Common Council is still trying to iron out what it wants to see in the contract.

“Right now, I think the council is trying to identify what they are looking for in a potential agreement,” Walters explained. “There’s no real issue.

“I think the council is just trying to identify what’s a good starting point, if you will,” she added.

Walters said the discussions are focusing on everything from salary to working conditions to length of a contract.

Walters is hopeful to have the discussions finished in the next week to two weeks.

“It would be a good timeline, if you would, to bring it to the first Common Council meeting in July,” she said. “Is that ambitious? It could be.”

She did say there is no disagreement with the choice of the Police and Fire Commission.

“Given the agreement comes to fruition, which I think it will, I’m extremely excited to work with Mark,” Walters said. “I think Mark has a lot of tenure here in the city, and definitely has added value to the team.”

Anderson, meanwhile, said he was “honored and excited.”

“My parents moved here in the mid-70s,” he said. “Since that time, I’ve always considered Burlington to be my home.”
