The search for a new City of Burlington police chief will – for now – remain local.
According to various sources, the Burlington Police and Fire Commission made the recommendation that the job be posted internally first.
According to Lt. Mark Anderson, the only job requirement is a bachelor’s degree. The listing also prefers at least 10 years of law enforcement experience – five in a supervisory position.
Anderson confirmed he would be one of the applicants for the position, and that he had both the bachelor’s degree and experience. He did not know the experience and degrees of other department members who might apply.
Mayor Bob Miller said simply Tuesday night that city staff is not involved right now, and that the Police and Fire Commission are handling the search.
The city police department currently has four sergeants – John Fisher, Brian Zmudzinski, Rob Jones and Jeremy Krusemark – as well as Dan Hayes, David Krupp and Rodney Thurin in the detective bureau.
Anderson said all would fall under the qualifications, as might officers who have served as shift commanders.
Former Police Chief Peter Nimmer’s last day was Friday. He was scheduled to start Monday as the new police chief for Shorewood. Nimmer served five years in Burlington after spending 12 years in Brown Deer with progressive supervisory roles.

I’m sure the Lieutenant is a fine young man but it is a bit scary that the article states, “He did not know the experience and degrees of other department members who might apply.”
Scary because he’s been the assistant chief for years and doesn’t know the experience and degrees of the supervisors working under him? Ouch.
