A family Christmas gathering took an ugly turn early Dec. 26 when sheriff’s deputies were called to break up a fight between brothers at a home in the Town of Burlington.
As a result, Robert J. Schultz, 43, of Hudson, has been charged in Racine County Circuit Court with disorderly conduct-domestic abuse, disorderly conduct and obstructing an officer. All three charges are misdemeanors.
According to the sheriff’s report included with the criminal complaint, deputies were called to a home just before 4 a.m. for a report of a fight in the backyard of a residence on Ketterhagen Road.
Deputies found the homeowner, James Schultz, with a swollen left eye, bleeding from his mouth and covered in mud. James Shultz told the deputies he had gotten into a fight with his brother, Robert Schultz, after his brother’s sons had awakened him and told him they feared for their safety because their father was drunk. James Schultz reportedly went to speak with his brother when the altercation occurred.
Family members told deputies that Robert Schultz had gotten into an argument with his wife after accusing her of cheating on him. They said Robert Schultz had been drinking all day and described him as a “mean drunk,” according to the report.
Robert Schultz reportedly told his wife that he was leaving and then went to a camper in the backyard to wake his three sons, who got into a truck with him. However, witness told deputies, the truck struck a tree as Robert Schultz repeatedly tried to drive away.
Robert Schultz then retreated to the camper, where deputies attempt to approach him. Family members told deputies that Schultz had access to a shotgun and a rifle in the camper.
The report contends Schultz initially refused to exit the camper or show his hands at a deputy’s request.
A deputy then fired his Taser at Schultz in an attempt to get him to comply, but one of the probes missed its mark, according to the report. Schultz then agreed to show his hands, at which point he was handcuffed and taken into custody.
Schultz is scheduled to make his initial appearance on the charges in Racine County Circuit Court Jan. 27.
