If you’ve noticed a new, bright-yellow bicycle rack in downtown Burlington in the past two weeks, well, you’re not alone.
The metal sculpture, in front of May’s Insurance and across the street from The Coffee House at Chestnut and Pine, was installed July 31 as the city’s newest bike rack and winner of the “Park in the Art” contest sponsored by the two businesses, Bike Burlington and the Burlington Area Arts Council.
The prize for the contest was $1,000, which Bike Burlington head Madonna Carr said likely went to putting the bike rack together.
“I love it,” Carr said. “I was hyperventilating when it was delivered. I just thought it was so beautiful. I love the color, I love that it’s eye-catching and I love that you know what it’s for.”
The winning entry – in the shape of a bicycle with a few new-age twists – was designed by Tom Wynn, a champion BMX rider with a hobby of fabricating metal sculptures.
Wynn said he had a number of ideas when he heard about the contest.
“The other thing that was important was that I wanted to represent the competition at hand,” he said. “I thought it held true with the concept and the people involved with the rack.”
Wynn thanked Carr and Bike Burlington for making the entire process run smoothly.
“It was a pleasure working with them,” Wynn said.
The same comment came from Carr – not only about working with Wynn, but with the help from the sponsors, and the City of Burlington in getting the bike rack installed.
“Everyone was just so nice and cooperative,” she said.
The competition will be held again next year, Carr said, as there are other areas in the city that need bike racks.
