Taking to the one-act play stage this season with an emotional story of the horrors of war, the Waterford Union High School one-act play wrapped up its competition season Nov. 21.
Performing at the Wisconsin State Theater Festival, the school’s one-act “Booby Trap” took home All-State honors Saturday morning.
“The young actors gave a great performance filled with energy,” said director Leigh Birmingham. “They should be proud of how far this production went, and how hard they worked to get there.”
The play – which tells the story of a serviceman in the near future who has stepped on a land mine – gained strong reviews at the sectional competition three weeks ago and a strong ovation when performed as part of WUHS’s Veterans Day activities.
Birmingham, a first-year director, wanted to pick a story that not only fit the time constraints but packed a punch.
“I knew I wanted to choose a piece that was emotional, dramatic and ensemble-based,” Birmingham said. “Forcing each actor to see themselves as part of the whole.”
The ensemble performance held together through the pressures of state.
“The group performed well as an ensemble, and although every performer tends to ask themselves what they could have done better, the students should be content with their representation of Waterford,” Birmingham said.
Here is a listing of those who participated in the one-act competition.
