The 2015-16 contract between the Burlington Area School District and the Burlington Education Association – the teachers union – was approved by the School Board Oct. 12.

The contract gives a 1.62 percent increase in base salary per cell – which Superintendent Peter Smet said was the specified state cost of living increase.

“Both sides agreed to the amount, yes,” Smet said.

One of the BEA negotiators, Sue Pedersen, confirmed that the two sides were very close to begin with. The only difference, she said, was that increase agreed on is to base wages, while the BEA proposal applied to actual salaries.

The contract process started in the summer and the district now has that piece to plug into its budget figures.

The meeting to finalize the school district budget will be Monday, Oct. 26, at the district office at 7 p.m.

Official numbers

The official enrollment numbers for the district are in.

According to Smet, there are 3,160 students enrolled in early education through 12th grade. The district had predicted 3,161 students.

The numbers continue BASD’s trend of declining enrollment. Student count was up last year to 3,208 students, but Smet said that was in large part due to the institution of 4-year-old kindergarten.

BASD had 3,157 students for the 2013-14 school year.
