From a small group that started out as 20 students wanting to raise money for the Transitional Living Center, Cold Hands Warm Hearts has transitioned into a major fundraiser for the homeless shelter.
“It’s an unbelievable group of teens,” said Kathy Martin, confirming that at least 75 students are expecting for this year’s event, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 17 at St. Charles Catholic Church in Burlington. “I think the teens who participate in this project, they exemplify what Pope Francis challenges all of us to do, which is love one another.”
The teenagers will simulate a one-night homeless experience in the St. Charles parking lot, eating only soup and bread for dinner and sleeping in cardboard boxes.
The event, organized by the Life Teen students at St. Charles, St. Mary and St. Joseph, Lyons, parishes, has a goal to raise more than $20,000 this year.
“I also believe they receive more joy in giving to those in need than the benefit TLC receives for their hard work,” Martin said. “It changes them.”
Since 2004, the event has raised more than $140,000 for TLC. To donate, make checks payable to TLC and send to Life Teen, c/o St. Charles Church, 440 Kendall Street, Burlington, WI, 53105.
