Organizers are in the final planning stages for the 19th annual Super Saturday, set for Sept. 12.
Centered around Union Grove’s Village Square and along Main Street, the family-focused community event will again be packed with activities throughout the day, from an early-morning 5K run to an evening street dance hosted by the local Kiwanis Club.
“Each year we try to present an event that both entertains our residents and also gives them a place where they can get information on goods and services available in the Village of Union Grove,” said Gordon Svendsen, Super Saturday Chairperson. “It is one part of what makes living in Union Grove a great place.”
This year’s theme is “Princesses and Superheroes.” To coincide, organizers have planned a Little Princess Contest on the main stage with a special appearance from Princess Ariel, The Little Mermaid. Former event chairperson Carolyn Preston is heading up the latest contest to be added to the slate of main stage attractions, which includes MC Geno Covelli and the live music show “Kids are People Too.”
Batman will also debut at this year’s event, joining kids on the main stage for Super Hero Training, according to Svendsen.
This year’s event kicks off with a 5K run/walk hosted by Community State Bank beginning with a 7 a.m. registration.
From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., local vendors, non-profit groups, emergency personnel and other participants will be set up with activities for families to enjoy while Cuddles and Billy Boy clowns offer free face painting and balloon animals.
“Many of the shops along Main Street set up sidewalk sales which creates something for everyone from Village Square, to the Graham Public Library, which also has its book sale,” said Svendsen.
The Bronco Select baseball team will be serving up corn, hot dogs and Pepsi for those in attendance. Hot dogs and Pepsi are provided free of charge from the local Piggly Wiggly with each ear of corn purchased.
The Kiwanis Street Dance takes over Village Square from 7 to 11 p.m., with performances by Weird Science and Rachel Lee.
Svendsen said he takes pride in leading plans for Super Saturday, noting it is a free, community-backed event led by local citizens and business leaders.
“Our funding comes from donations from the community,” he said, adding that support from a number of local businesses, the Kiwanis, Union Grove Lions Club and Village as well as the selfless time given by about a dozen volunteers, makes Super Saturday a success year after year.
“Super Saturday is truly a community event – run by the community and attended by those in the community,” he said.
The event is free but donations are appreciated. Anyone who would like to donate to the annual event can send contributions to Super Saturday, 1014 Vine St., Union Grove, WI 53182.
Sponsorship and participant forms are still available. Visit the service counter at Piggly Wiggly, 4400 67th Dr., or email Svendsen at [email protected].
New ideas are also welcome. Anyone who would like to get involved can email Svendsen at [email protected].

Streets closed, trolley rides offered
Super Saturday organizers will again seek permission from the Village of Union Grove to close off streets and limit parking in order to accommodate the large-scale event. Portions of streets impacted will include Russell Drive, 10th Avenue, Vine Street, Main Street, Swantz Way and Mill Avenue.
Trolley rides will be offered to traverse Main Street, between the south parking lot of Union Grove High School and Graham Public Library.
