After seeing a decrease in resident enrollment for seven consecutive years, Yorkville Elementary School has finally witnessed an increase this year.
District Administrator Dave Alexander made the report at the July 14 meeting of Yorkville Elementary school.
“I was reporting to the board that it’s a good trend for us because so much of our school funding is based on what your resident enrollment count is,” Alexander explained. “Your state aid and your revenue limit is most driven by your resident count, so that’s a positive for us.”
District receive state aid for each pupil, and a revenue limit is set in each district depending on enrollment figures over a set period of time.
Alexander said the board also discussed the budget and approved a projected budget for the annual meeting, set for Aug. 24.
“That’s just preliminary because there are a lot of variables that we still have to finalize,” Alexander said. “We’ll finalize what our enrollment numbers are, what the tax levy will get to be and the revenue limit.”
Despite cuts, the school’s current budget has increased 3.5 percent over the past two years – 1.75 percent each year, he said.
“We are looking to do a pay increase for our staff, 1.62 percent, which is the Consumer Price Index, the cost of living increase,” said Alexander.

The Yorkville Elementary School board also discussed the permanent inclusion of Lego Robotics course in the curriculum.
“The board had some questions about how this gets into our long term strategic plans for our science curriculum and wanted some more work done between our new principal and our science teacher to examine our curriculum closer,” Alexander said. The proposal was tabled for further discussion, he said.
