Officials at the Burlington Municipal Airport will study the possibility of lengthening a runway due to safety issues.
Mayor Jeannie Hefty announced on her Facebook page Tuesday that the Airport Committee had voted at its meeting Aug. 25 to request a study for extending the main runway.
Hefty stressed in her Facebook post that nothing has been decided, and that the City Council has not even been asked to take up the issue.
“If the study proceeds this could be one to two years before public meetings (for) what the study showed,” Hefty wrote. “At this time facts will be given to
neighbors of the airport and also citizens.”
Similar plans in the past have brought opposition from neighbors of the airport, some of whom still have signs posted opposing runway expansion.
The airport held its annual fly-in fundraiser Sunday.
