It sounds like the setup for a joke.
Public Enemy No. 13, a stowaway, an English lord, and a former evangelist turned nightclub singer all on the same cruise ship.
Throw in some shenanigans, an adorable dog and a boatload (pun intended) of dancing, and you have the classic musical, “Anything Goes.”
Burlington High School’s theater department will open the show Friday, March 11, at 7 p.m. Shows are at 7 p.m. March 12, 18 and 19, and at 2 p.m. March 13 and 20.
Tickets are available by visiting brownpapertickets.com and searching for “BHS Anything Goes” or at the high school office.
The show, directed by BHS teacher Troy Everson and Beth Reetz, is the second “old time” musical in as many years for BHS. Last year, the school performed “Annie Get Your Gun.”
“The overwhelming response we received from the community said we could easily do another one, and people will like it just as well,” Everson said.
The show features two separate love triangles – with each trying to help the other – an overbearing mother forcing her daughter to marry, and both Public Enemy No. 13 “Moonface” Martin and the mistakenly identified Public Enemy No. 1, who is actually Billy Crocker.
Crocker stowed away on the ship to try and woo Hope Harcourt, who is engaged to Lord Evelyn Oakleigh.
“It’s very challenging,” Everson said of the show. “The music is really hard, and the choreography is also super challenging.”
The show is double cast, with two actors or actresses splitting the main roles. The only exception? Cheeky the dog, played by the Tim and Julie Gesteland family dog, Charlie.
“It’s really a very fun comedy,” Everson said. “It’s a light-hearted, very fun, energetic and funny show.”
