After narrowing the field two weeks ago, the Burlington Area School District chose Julie Thomas to fill its new communications coordinator position last week.
Thomas, who used to hold the same position at Valparaiso University, was approved by the School Board Monday night at the board’s monthly meeting, and is expected to start Nov. 28.
Superintendent Peter Smet said Thomas rose to the top of the list due to her experience in the area of communications, “especially in post-secondary education.”
“She has broad and varied experiences in the area of communications,” Smet said. “Her references spoke very highly of the quality and quantity of her work.
“I feel she has the skill set, experience, desire and will do an excellent job for our district,” he added.
The other finalists for the position were Nicole DeLassus, Jacki Jankowski, Jennifer Eisenbart and Jodi Jonas. A fifth candidate dropped out of the process before interviewing.
Thomas attended Monday night’s meeting. She received her public relations degree from Valparaiso, and also earned a master of science degree in digital media while working at the university.
She has worked for a variety of non-profit organizations, and currently resides in the Burlington area with her son and husband.
“I’m pretty excited about it,” Thomas said. “I look forward to working with the School Board, the teachers and the staff.
“I know they’re very dedicated to student achievement, and I’m proud to be a part of that,” she added.
