Ken Kesey’s classic novel, brought to both stage and screen, will be on display at the Haylofters in Burlington starting Thursday.

“One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” the story of a man who willingly sends himself to a mental institutional to avoid serving time, opens at the Malt House Theater Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Opening night tickets are $13, while other nights are $15. The tickets are available online at thehaylofters.com, at the theater at 109 Main St., Burlington, and at The Coffee House at Chestnut and Pine, 492 N. Pine St., Burlington.

Director Julie Patten brings a cast of Haylofters’ regulars to the stage in the story of Randall P. McMurphy, who challenges the routines and structure at the mental institution and in the process, draws the unwanted ire of Nurse Ratched.

Patten said she got the idea from another Haylofters regular, and decided to submit the show.

“It’s a classic,” she explained. She also said the actors and actresses get a chance to dig down deep into the characters, which range from the intimidating Nurse Ratched to the thoughtful but slightly blunt Mr. Harding.

The cast includes long-time Haylofters’ actress and director Jenny Hoffman playing Nurse Ratched, while Michael Daujotas is McMurphy.

Joining McMurphy as patients are Paul Weber as Chief Bromden, Rob King as Harding, Zach Opal as Billy Babbit, Mike Pinter as Scanlon, Ted Danes as Cheswick, James Howe as Ruckley, Scott McQuillan as Martini and Tara Petrozelli and Christina Stevens as visitors Candy Starr and Sandra, respectively.

Other cast members who are institution staff include Nina Fiegel as Nurse Flinn, Bob Hartwick as Dr. Spivey and Ed Spencer and Jesse Hurst as Aides Warren and Williams, respectively.

In addition to Patten as director, Michelle Morrell is producer and lights director, Al Murin special effects and backstage manager, Greg Klas on sound, King and Rick Morrell as set designers and builders, Krystle Daujotas as the marquee designer and Logan Bydalek on lighting design.
