A Union Grove Union High School student was charged with a pair of felonies after allegedly making a threat against classmates last week.
David J. Kopecky, 17, posted his bail March 24 – the same day of the incident. According to the press release from the Racine County Sheriff’s Department, Kopecky was hit with both felony and misdemeanor charges, but no criminal complaint is available and the case is not listed on the Wisconsin Circuit Court website.
Racine County Sheriff Christopher Schmaling said Tuesday Kopecky was due in court this week.
Schmaling confirmed the threat last Thursday, and the press release issued later that day offered some details. The Racine County Communications Center received a phone call at 8:20 a.m. regarding a potential threat, and deputies went immediately to the high school.
Deputies who responded reported Kopecky had allegedly made threats to blow up the high school, and found Kopecky and took him into custody.
Sheriff’s investigators were able to determine this was an isolated incident and there were no other parties involved in communicating or carrying out any threats.
“At this point, there’s no information to verify that school students are in danger,” Schmaling said in a text about 2:30 p.m. on March 24. Students remained at school for the day, while Kopecky was taken to Racine County Jail and later charged.
Union Grove Union High School Superintendent Al Mollerskov said there was no “list” of students, and the sheriff’s presence that remained on site March 24 was precautionary. Parents were notified after Kopecky was taken into custody.
Union Grove Union High School, like most area schools, is on spring break this week.
