Man accused of staging theft to get pain pills

A 42-year-old Burlington man is facing felony and misdemeanor charges after allegedly reporting a theft of his prescription pain medication in order to get a premature refill.

According to the criminal complaint filed in Racine County Court last week, Ralph Brown allegedly called City of Burlington police in August 2015 to report his apartment had been burglarized. In addition to his pills – and the pills of his girlfriend – Brown also alleged he was missing five football jerseys, a wolf statue, a television and video games and biker rings.

The officer who took the report found a number of inconsistencies and asked Brown to come in the next day. There, Brown allegedly admitted to staging the incident in order to get a refill of his pills. He also allegedly admitted taking his girlfriend’s pills without her knowledge.

After investigating, police found Brown had gotten a refill of his medication based on the fraudulent report five days after reporting it to the police.

Brown is charged with misdemeanor obstructing an officer, as well as felony possession of narcotics and obtaining a controlled substance by fraud.
