In spite of heat on Wednesday and storms on Thursday, the Racine County Fair enjoyed a large turnout last week.

Scott Gunderson, the Racine County Fair president, said attendance for the fair was at 87,610 – down about 8,000 from the previous year, but good considering the heat July 27 and the storms that rolled through in the afternoon and evening of July 28.

“We’re very happy with it,” Gunderson said.

What helped boost the fair was the largest single-day take in the fair’s history Sunday, when 27,684 came to the grounds.

“We had a tremendous day on Sunday,” Gunderson said. “We had the best day we’ve ever had on Sunday.”

In general, he added, it appeared sales at various places on the grounds were up as well.

“A lot of the vendors I talked to, the food vendors, were up,” Gunderson said. “The midway was up.

“Overall, things seem to be up,” he added. “Overall, the fair board was thrilled to death.”

There were more than 16,000 entries at the fair, split about evenly between the junior fair and the open classes. About 1,300 people accounted for those 16,000 entries.

“That’s very good entries,” said Gunderson. “A lot of folks like to bring their stuff out.”

The fair’s headline musical act – Ted Nugent, who played Saturday at the grandstand – turned out to be a non-issue.

“There was a little (complaining),” Gunderson said. “We had a handful of negatives. Overall, we had zero problems (at that concert).”

He said the grandstands were nearly sold out, the track was sold out and there were no security issues.

“Great crowd; no problems,” Gunderson said he was told by the Racine County Sheriff’s department.
