Reception venue eyed for former furniture store

Owner Shad Branen stopped by the City of Burlington Committee of the Whole meeting last week to announce the first tenants at a prominent downtown retail building.

The former Schuette-Daniels Furniture store – now known as The Mercantile – will house both a wedding reception/meeting venue and Christy’s Bon Bon Belle Bridal, currently located at 489 Milwaukee Ave.

Branen said he expects the first tenants to be in the Mercantile by January, with others to follow in the spring. The planned basement co-working space is also on schedule, and outside green space is in the works.

“Hopefully, this project will become a reality very, very soon,” Branen said.

Former property closed

The City Council asked the Department of Public Works to close off the former gas station lot at 256 W. State St. to parking. The city is worried about liability as the station has been being used as overflow parking for nearby B.J. Wentker’s restaurant and St. Mary Catholic Church.

Grant application

The council approved an allocation of $9,725 for a grant writer so that the City and Town of Burlington can pursue funds to purchase new self-contained breathing apparatus for local firefighters.

The total cost for the grant writer is $19,450.
