The girls on the Waterford High School Bowling Club finally get to see what the fuss over the state tournament is all about.
The Wolverines’ girls team is heading to the Wisconsin High School Bowling Club State Championships this weekend for the first time in program history.
“They’re ecstatic, especially the seniors who have been here all four years,” boys coach James Schnell said. “This is perfect for them. It’s all they’ve been talking about.”
The Waterford boys are going to state as a team for the third straight season. The tournament begins today and concludes Sunday at Dale’s Weston Lanes in Schofield.
River City Lanes in Waterford is the team’s home. Zak Ksobiech in the boys competition and Tatum Ruffalo for the girls are competing in the individual competition.
Ruffalo qualified as an individual for the third straight year. Ksobiech is going as an individual for the first time.
Nathaniel Rickert, Jesse Mack, Jacob Murphy, Luke Bozio, Ksobiech, AJ Dawes, Joseph Schwartz, Trey Adams, Seth Jensen and Brandon Gerber are on the boys’ team.
Ruffalo, Sydney Wiroll, Reebee Ratkowski, Megan Pozek, Amber Bertschinger, Hanna Kiedrowski, Lynsey Burt and Becca Wolke are on the girls team. Matt Zanella coaches the Waterford girls.
The Wolverines’ boys and girls teams each compete in Division 2, and are in the WHBC’s District 3A. District 3A includes the Kenosha and Racine area.
“We’re pretty happy,” Schnell said. “This is the best we’ve ever done in the bowling club at Waterford. It was really the kids.”
Schnell said the Wolverines graduate eight players after this season, seven of whom bowled with the club for four years. Those on the squad are part of a surge in bowling in academia – according to the WHBC it is one of the fastest-growing activities in both high school and college over the last decade.
“We always preach, and this is how we get our bowlers – this is the one sport you can take with you the rest of your life,” Schnell said.
