Absolutely Waterford will hold its “Pooch Parade” Saturday starting at 8 a.m.
Check-in for the event is from 8 to 9 a.m. at the municipal park adjacent to the fire and rescue station on Second St., one block north of Main St.
Initially, there was a $5 fee to enter dogs in the “Strut Your Mutt” portion of the parade, but Absolutely Waterford Executive Director Cynthia Jensen said the organization decided to make a late change.
“As we got closer to it, we realized this is a promotional event for us,” Jensen said. “We have two terrific sponsors, so we decided to drop that part of it.
“We’re getting lots of great feedback, and we hope it’s going to be a great parade,” Jensen added.
There will be prizes awarded in four categories: best dog/owner look-a-like, best dog outfit, friendliest dog and overall judges’ favorite. Prizes range from cash to neck wreaths and a free winner’s photo.
Fourteen downtown businesses will participate with special animal and people treats, and 12 other organizations and vendors will be at the event.
“A lot of rescue organizations are going to be there,” said Jensen, adding that Lakeland Animal Shelter would be on site with dogs ready for adoption. If a person follows up and completes an adoption started Saturday, the Loose Ends sewing group that meets at Waterford Public Library will donate a dog bed or a toy.
Love Inc. will also participate with dog items for sale. Half of their sales that day will go to the humane society.
