A Union Grove woman died following a two-vehicle crash on Sylvania Avenue in Yorkville Tuesday.
Evelyn Goebel, 87, was a passenger in a vehicle driven by her husband when they were struck about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
According to a press release from the Racine County Sheriff’s Department, a preliminary investigation indicated that the driver of the other vehicle, 21-year-old Aaron Turner of Kenosha, failed to yield the right of way while making a left turn.
The department stated that alcohol did not appear to be a factor, and all parties were wearing their seatbelts.
Her husband, Earl, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, but his wife died after being transported to Wheaton Franciscan Hospital. He was transported to Froedtert.
“She was the passenger,” Union Grove/Yorkville Fire Chief Tom Czerniak said. “There was significant damage to at least one of the vehicles that I saw.”
The crash occurred during the heavy rain that moved through the area Tuesday afternoon, and was the first of two in a very short period of time. Czerniak said a good deal of staff was committed to the first call when the second call came in.
“We called South Shore for the first one because we’ve been having some issues with one of our rescue squads,” Czerniak said. “We didn’t want to put everything out on the road initially, and we told there were at least two patients.”
The second accident proved relatively minor compared to the first. Czerniak said reports showed “major front-end damage” to both vehicles in the first accident, and “minor to moderate front-end damage” in the second.
“The female driver that we transported had what we would consider non-life-threatening injuries,” Czerniak said. The other driver was not transported, and neither was the driver of the second vehicle in the first accident.
