Burlington Little League will be allowed to install a sprinkler system at Branen Field on the city’s west side.
The City Council approved the project Tuesday.
Mayor Bob Miller said the Little League organization will pay for the equipment and installation necessary for the project.
The system features water sensors that only activate the sprinklers when the grass is dry, according to Miller.
While there is no cost to the city for the installation, the city will be responsible for the cost of the water. That expense will be paid through the Park Board’s budget, according to Department of Public Works Director Connie Wilson.
“It seems to me that it’s a good deal,” Alderman Tom Vos said shortly before the council voted unanimously to approve the project.
Library carpeting
The City Council on Tuesday also approved the installation of new carpeting at the Burlington Public Library.
Aldermen accepted a bid from Best Value Flooring of Burlington in the amount of $30,817 for the project. That amount breaks down to $23,927 for carpet, adhesive, cove base and transitions; and $6,890 for labor.
Best Flooring’s bid was the lowest of three received from local contractors.
The cost is nearly $4,000 more than budgeted for the project, which was based on a year-old estimate. The additional funds will also come from the city’s 2011 equipment replacement fund.
Librarian Gayle Falk told officials the new carpeting will likely be installed sometime during the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day – when the library would normally be closed – to minimize interruption of services.
“We’re working that out,” she said in response to a question regarding the exact date.
