The City of Burlington police got an unusual report Tuesday morning.

The son of a Burlington resident, cleaning out his father’s home Tuesday, found a World War II-era hand grenade in his father’s basement.

The city police coordinated with the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Department at about 11 a.m. to bring the department’s bomb squad to Burlington, and the grenade was retrieved shortly after 2 p.m.

The bomb squad then transported the grenade to the Burlington municipal compost site and detonated it.

“It did make a very loud bang,” confirmed city Police Chief Peter Nimmer. He added that judging by the size of the bang, the grenade appeared to be live, but without X-raying the device, it will never be known for sure.

Nimmer said the situation was under control the entire time, and handled per the department’s protocol.

“No one was at risk at any time,” Nimmer added.
