Candidates may now file for local seats
Burlington Mayor Bob Miller will seek a third two-year term this spring when seats on both the City Council and Town Board are up for election.
Today is the first day for potential candidates for local office to circulate nomination papers.
Miller confirmed Tuesday that he will run again for the office.
“I want to see the city start to grow again,” Miller said. “Get us out of the slump that we’re in, get us moving forward again.
“I’ve enjoyed (being mayor) immensely, and I think the city is moving in the right direction.”
Miller said he was unaware at this point of any opposition for the mayoral spot.
Single seats in each of the city’s four aldermanic districts will also be on the spring ballot. The incumbents who currently hold those seats are Edward Johnson (1st District), James Prailes (2nd District), Tom Vos (3rd District) and Jeff Fischer (4th District).
Prailes said Tuesday night that he wasn’t 100 percent sure, but it was “more than likely” he would run for re-election. Vos said, “to be honest about it, I haven’t even thought about it yet, but at first blush, yes.”
“That’s five months away,” Vos added.
Fischer and Johnson could not be reached for comment.
The seat held by Municipal Judge Marvin Daniel is up for election as well.
Those who are interested in seeking one of the city’s positions may obtain nomination papers from City Clerk Beverly Gill at City Hall, 300 N. Pine Street.
Nomination papers with a sufficient number of signatures are due Jan. 3. The spring election is scheduled for April 3. A primary, if needed, will be Feb. 21.
Town of Burlington
In the Town of Burlington, two seats on the Town Board, one on the Bohners Lake Sanitary District Board and the municipal judgeship are up for election.
The Town Board incumbents who face re-election are Joan Boehm and Jeff Lang. Their seats carry two-year terms.
The Bohners Lake Sanitary District seat on the ballot is currently held by Board President Harvey Kandler. That seat carries a six-year term.
The municipal judge position, which is for two years, is currently held by Richard Scholze.
