Police fire tear gas into residence during afternoon-long incident
Racine County SWAT team members in full tactical gear took a man into custody at a Town of Burlington residence about 5:15 p.m. Thursday following a several-hour standoff.
It is not know what condition the man was in, but it appeared rescue personnel were tending to him on the front lawn of the residence. He was taken to Memorial Hospital of Burlington by the Burlington Rescue Squad about 5:25 p.m.
Law enforcement officials fired several rounds of tear gas or a similar substance into a Town of Burlington home starting about 4:30 p.m. in an attempt to flush out the man who had been holed up in the home just off Arbor Lane (east of McHenry Street) for most of the afternoon.
The chemical agent was fired into the home after an official on a loud speaker ordered the man multiple times “to come out with your hands up — you will not be harmed.”
SWAT members moved into position around the residence shortly after 3:30 p.m. The situation began sometime after noon.
A resident who lives in the area said she was told by a law enforcement official that a person of interest was holed up in one of the nearby homes.
Additional details were not immediately available from the Sheriff’s Department, however, Sheriff Christopher Schmaling was on the scene as law enforcement agencies and Burlington Area Rescue Squad members stationed at Capri’s restaurant, the former White Oaks.
As of 2:45 p.m., students at nearby Winkler School were being held at the school with dismissal to proceed as planned with some modifications to the where the buses would arrive and depart from.
Once the students were dismissed, officials closed off McHenry Street at about 3:30 p.m. and SWAT members moved into position around the residence.
Additional details regarding the situation will be posted here as they become available.
