Homeowners would have to pay half the cost of project

Homeowners living along sections of eight City of Burlington streets will likely be asked to pay half the cost of replacing sidewalks running through their properties in 2012.
The City Council, meeting as a Committee of the Whole Tuesday, took the first step toward that end by recommending approval of the intent to levy special assessments for the affected properties.
According to Public Works Supervisor Dan Jensen, the project is in keeping with the city’s annual program to replace deteriorated sections of sidewalk on an annual basis.
The city pays half the cost of the replacement and the property owner is responsible for picking up the rest of the expense. The assessments can be paid in full or in three installments with an interest rate that is one-half percent over the total cost of the work, according to the city’s resolution.
Sidewalk sections tentatively slated for repair are:
• 100 block of Beth Court;
• 700 block of Chicory Road;
• 100 block of Duane Street;
• 100 block of North Elmwood Avenue;
• 200 block of Gardner Avenue;
• 400-500 blocks of Hawthorn Street;
• 100 block of East Jefferson Street; and
• 300 block of Kendall Street.
If the City Council approves the resolution at its Feb. 21 meeting, a public hearing will be set for March 20 at 6:30 p.m.
Affected residents will be notified of the hearing by mail and will have a chance to speak to the council regarding the proposed assessments.
The actual cost of those assessments will be determined by the total cost of the project and the amount of individual property impacted by the work.
