What used to be the City of Burlington Department of Public Works building is gone, torn down in the waning days of 2011.

An auto parts store is slated for the now-vacant land, and steps toward making that happen took place Tuesday night at the City of Burlington Plan Commission meeting.

The commission unanimously approved the Certified Survey Map that will zone the acre of land as M-1, light manufacturing district.

There are currently two lots – Lot 1, which is roughly one acre and has an accepted offer on it by Greene County Realty Company out of Missouri and a tentative closing date of March, and Lot 2, which is 2.5 acres and includes part of the ChocolateFest grounds.

Mayor Bob Miller said that the survey map as it is set up will not affect ChocolateFest or the long-term lease organizers of the festival and the city agreed to last year.

Miller said there doesn’t appear to be any obstacles toward closing the sale for the auto parts store, but Greene County Realty is planning soil sample testing.

“I hope we’re moving forward, based on what those soil samples show,” Miller said.

The land is expected to be developed into an O’Reilly Auto Parts store. The agreed purchase price for the acre parcel was $475,000.
