A crash that took the life of a revered local woman last week has claimed a second victim.
Former Burlington resident Diane Chart, died in a car crash Sept. 8 after picking up a foreign exchange student at the airport.
Now, that exchange student, 19-year-old Tomas Savari, has died as well. According to a report in the Lakeland Times, Sarvari died surrounded by family at Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee.
There was no immediate word on Diane Chart’s son, Dylan, who had been listed in critical condition at Froedtert hospital last week. He was later transferred to Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, and his condition had been upgraded to stable.
Chart, 51, who had lived in the Minocqua area for the past eight years, died doing what she did so naturally – serving others.
She and her son, Dylan, 15, had driven to Milwaukee to pick up Tomas, an exchange student from Argentina whom she and her husband Steve were hosting at their home in Winchester.
As they left the airport about 5 p.m., according to published reports, the Toyota Corolla Chart was driving turned left from South 27th Street in Greenfield onto West Coldspring Road and into the path of a pickup truck driven by a Milwaukee woman.
“The services are still kind of up in the air,” said Lisa Tenhagen, Chart’s sister. She said scheduling those services would be dependent on when Dylan got out of the hospital.
“It’s tough,” Tenhagen said. “But you plug through.”
The 70-year-old woman whose truck collided with Chart’s car was treated at a Milwaukee area hospital and released.
Greenfield Police Capt. Michael Brunner was quoted in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel as saying neither alcohol or excessive speed appear to be a factor, and all involved were wearing seatbelts.
