As the state-mandated date for final layoff notices for public school teachers approaches, the Burlington Area School District is in the final stages of determining which teachers will be laid off.

Due to a new process, most of the teachers who were named in the preliminary layoffs notices have requested hearings to review their situations.

“We’re in the process right now of holding private conferences for teachers who requested them,” said Superintendent David Moyer. Fourteen of the 17 teachers who received preliminary notices requested hearings.

“The administration will explain its rationale for the decision,” Moyer said. “Other parties will explain their point of view on the situation.

“The board will listen to that,” he added. “The decisions on notices of non-renewal will be made by the May 15 deadline.”

Since this is a first-time process, Moyer had no way to predict whether the teachers would win their appeals.

“This is the first time this process has ever been employed,” Moyer said.

The BASD School Board Finance Committee held the second of its three study sessions for the 2012-13 budget Tuesday. The board was expected to review many of its expenditures.

“It’s everything that is not salary and benefits,” said BASD Assistant Superintendent Peter Smet. “All our utilities, transportation, supplies, equipment.

Smet said the process seemed to be moving along smoothly.

“It’s going along good,” he said. “We’re taking it piece by piece.

“Obviously, the hardest part is the salary and benefits – and it always is.”
