Citing health concerns, City of Burlington Aldermanic candidate Peter Girolamo dropped out the race for the 2nd District seat in the April 3 election last week.
Girolamo said Friday he’s throwing his support behind Ruth Dawidziak, whom he would have faced in the spring election for the seat currently held by James Prailes, who did not seek another term.
“I would like my supporters to support her as well,” he said of Dawidziak.
Because Girolamo decided not to run after the election had been set, his name will still appear on the ballot April 3.
He asked people not to vote for him and said that if he is elected, he would decline the position due to health concerns.
Girolamo served on the Common Council from 2006 to 2008. In 2008 he ran for mayor, losing to current Mayor Bob Miller.
Girolamo’s announcement leaves city voters with just one actually contested race. That is in the 4th District where newcomers Tom Preusker and Kent Strong are competing for the seat that will be left vacant by incumbent Jeff Fischer.
Incumbent Aldermen Ed Johnson (1st District) and Tom Vos (3rd District) are seeking re-election without opposition, as are Miller for the mayor’s post and Marvin Daniel for the municipal judge’s seat.
The Standard Press will provide in-depth coverage of the contested race in the weeks leading up to the election.
