Proceeds of cut-a-thon will go to United Way

Locks getting a little long? Looking to get your children shorn before they head back to school? Simply need a trim?
Cost Cutters in Burlington is hoping you’ll give them a look Sunday evening.
For two hours Sunday night, the hair salon will offer haircuts in a “Cut-A-Thon” for a minimum donation of $10 with the benefits supporting the United Way of Racine County.
For that amount, the Walmart Subway will provide a free cookie to everyone participating. If you donate more than $10, a coupon for a free six-inch sub from the Walmart Subway will be provided.
“I wanted to be involved with the community,” said Subway’s Jon Ruisch. “United Way is a good foundation … and I’ll be doing more stuff within them.
“It’s good for businesses within Walmart to do stuff like this.”
The event was organized by Candie Edwards, one of the stylists at Cost Cutters.
“We had done some charity work in the past, done some free haircuts, some cancer benefits,” Edwards explained. “I had done some work for United Way before, and I thought a Cut-A-Thon would be great.”
Sunday’s haircuts will be on a first-come, first-serve basis from 5-7 p.m. People are advised to arrived early to sign up for a time. There will be seven stylists available to cut hair, and Edwards is hoping those seven will be busy from start to finish.
“We hope so,” she said. “We haven’t done this before, so we don’t know exactly what our numbers will be.”
She’s hoping to be able to raise at least $500 – the maximum Thrivent Financial has pledged to match with the Cut-A-Thon.
“We want to do at least $500,” said Edwards, referring to Thrivent Financial’s offer of matching funds.
Edwards said she got the idea from the store owner.
“Our owner owns a couple of Cost Cutters,” Edwards explained. “They’ve done a couple of Cut-A-Thons. They’ve always turned out very successful.”
And – completely by luck, Edwards said – the Cut-A-Thon happens to take place before the start of a new school year.
“Coincidental, actually,” Edwards said. “We were trying to get a date between Subway and Walmart, and it just happened to work out before school started.
“We’re hoping to get a better turnout because of it.” All Cost Cutters asks is that people come with an open heart – and generous donations.
“We’re trying to get the word out about United Way,” Edwards said. “Colleen (Benkendorf, Western Racine County United Way manager) had to actually come in and explain what United Way did.
“The girls are really excited now.”
United Way supports the area through more than 40 programs that serve Western Racine County residents. Ten of those programs are located at Love Inc. The charity is the largest supporter of Love’s food pantry. It also includes Imagination Library, a program in which children can sign up and receive a free book delivered to their mailbox every month until they are 5, regardless of income.
